Celebrating 100 Years of World Mission Day and 110 Years of the Pontifical Missionary Union

In 2026, the Catholic Church celebrates two closely connected milestones that invite gratitude, renewal, and commitment: the 100th anniversary of World Mission Day and the 110th anniversary of the founding of the Pontifical Missionary Union. Together, these anniversaries illuminate a single missionary heartbeat that has sustains the Church’s evangelizing vocation across continents, cultures, and generations.

World Mission Day, celebrated annually throughout the universal Church, was established to remind all the baptized that mission is not the task of a few, but the responsibility of all. It calls every local community to pray, to give, and to witness—so that the Gospel may be proclaimed where it is not yet known and where communities are fragile or forgotten. For a century, this day has drawn the Church outward, fostering solidarity between churches and strengthening the bond between faith and love in action.

The Pontifical Missionary Union, founded 110 years ago, has played a decisive role in shaping this missionary consciousness. Dedicated especially to the formation of priests, religious, and pastoral leaders, the Union has worked tirelessly to place mission at the heart of theological reflection, spiritual life, and pastoral planning. Its vision is clear: when those who serve the Church are deeply formed in a missionary spirit, the whole People of God are inspired to live the Gospel more generously.

The connection between these two jubilees is profound. World Mission Day is the visible, communal expression of a missionary Church, while the Pontifical Missionary Union nurtures the inner foundations that make such a day fruitful. One gathers the faithful around prayer and sharing; the other prepares hearts and minds to understand why mission matters and how it must be lived. Together, they testify that mission is not an optional activity, but the very nature of the Church.

This year’s theme, “One in Christ, United in Mission”, is also the theme of The Holy Father´s Leo XIV`s Message for the World Mission Day 2026, celebrated on 18th October. The Holy Father´s message emphasizes that unity in Christ is never closed in on itself. Communion with Christ leads inevitably to communion with one another—and from that communion flows the courage to cross boundaries and bring the Gospel to all of our brothers and sisters. To listen, to serve and to proclaim hope. In a world marked by division, conflict, and indifference, the Pope reminds us that the Church’s missionary unity is a credible sign of God’s reconciling love.

For us in the Nordic countries, these celebrations carry a particular significance. As small Catholic communities living in largely secular societies, we are often reminded that mission does not begin far away — it begins at home. The Nordic context challenges us to witness with humility, dialogue, and perseverance. Remembering these jubilees helps us see that our local efforts are part of a much larger global movement, sustained by prayer and solidarity across nations.

As we look ahead with gratitude and hope, we entrust this renewed missionary commitment to God’s loving care.

May all who work for mission in the Nordic countries—priests, religious, lay faithful, volunteers, and supporters—be richly blessed by God, strengthened in faith, encouraged in hope, and renewed in love, as together we remain one in Christ, united in mission.
